Claude Design.

Claude Design launched this week. DESIGN.md is the format that will still matter in five years.

Claude Design launched this week at claude.ai/design. It runs on Opus 4.7 and turns a prompt into a website, a pitch deck, or a 45-second explainer video.

The headline capability is real. DESIGN.md, the file format underneath it, is what will still matter in five years.

What it is

Claude Design is a dedicated surface at claude.ai/design, separate from the standard chat interface. You prompt it, it renders. Three output types:

  • Full landing pages with working layout
  • Pitch decks with speaker notes
  • Short animated videos with motion and transitions

It’s backed by Opus 4.7, Anthropic’s vision model. That’s why the output has actual spatial awareness, not just layout-shaped text.

How to use it

Three workflows worth running.

One-shot landing page. Give it a product, a value prop, and a tone. It returns a full page with nav, hero, features, and footer. The first pass is almost never final. Reprompt to tighten copy and reorder sections. Treat it as a wireframe generator, not a finished asset.

DESIGN.md upload. The one most people will skip and shouldn’t. Write a markdown file that defines your colour palette, type system, voice rules, layout conventions, and imagery guidelines. Upload it. Every subsequent generation stays on-brand. One file replaces the “explain our brand to the AI every time” loop.

Video-to-slides. Want a pitch deck? Don’t ask for slides. Ask for a 45-second video of the same content first, then ask Claude to turn the video into slides. Prompting for video forces the model to think in motion, sequencing, and hierarchy. Those structural decisions carry into the slide output. Skipping straight to slides gives you flatter results.

Anthropic also published a registry at getdesign.md where you can download the brand spec of established companies and fork it as a starting point. Useful for speed. Useful for learning how a good DESIGN.md is structured.

Where it’s strong

Speed of first draft. Blank page to working layout in one prompt. For early-stage concept work, investor decks under time pressure, or internal proposals, this is an unfair advantage.

Brand consistency across formats. Once your DESIGN.md is written, the same brand renders as a landing page, deck, or video without rebuilding the system each time. That is a real workflow gain.

Non-designers shipping credible work. If design isn’t your job but you occasionally need a landing page or a deck, this closes the gap between idea and artifact without a Fiverr loop or a week of Figma.

Where it falls short

Token burn. Opus 4.7 doing vision work chews through a session budget fast. One landing page is not one chat message. Budget for it.

Pixel-level control. If you want a specific shade of grey on a button border, you are fighting the tool. Coarse control works, fine control doesn’t.

Vendor lock-in on the format. DESIGN.md is Anthropic’s format. No published spec, no committee, no standard. If Figma ships a competing format, or Adobe, or Google, your carefully written brand spec may not port cleanly.

Recognisable AI look. Sharp, clean, slightly too symmetrical. A trained eye spots it. For final work, expect to rework the output.

My take

The generator is useful now. DESIGN.md is what will outlast it.

Brand guidelines have lived in PDFs, Figma files, and 80-slide decks for 20 years. Written for humans. Unreadable by tools. Every designer who joined a new company spent a week rebuilding the house style from scratch.

DESIGN.md is the first serious attempt at a brand spec that machines can read. If the format catches on, it stops being about Claude. Midjourney reads it. Gemini reads it. Your internal tool reads it. The brand becomes portable across every AI surface that generates creative.

Whoever owns that format owns the layer below every design tool for the next decade.

If you work in brand, design, or content, this is the week to write your DESIGN.md. Even if you never open Claude Design, codifying your brand into a file that a machine can read is going to be table stakes within a year.
